Coxswain Commands

Ready All, Row

Begin rowing. Usually started at the finish or catch.

Weigh Enough

Hard/Immediate stop of rowing. Can be called at any time.

Hold Water

Hard/Drastic slowdown of boat speed. Rowers stick their square oars fully in the water and brace against the oar.

One Foot, Up and In

Getting in a boat. With one hand on the sweep oar (or if sculling, holding both oars) and the other on the gunwhale, rowers step their foot away from shore/dock into the boat first on the deck with grip tape. They then simultaneously sit down in their seat and bring their shore-side foot into the boat next to the first foot.

Power 10 (or 20)

These are strokes where rowers row with all they can muster; row at 110%.

Let it Run

Rowers stop rowing and pause at the finish + arms away with oars off of the water. Usually called after 2 strokes.

Check it Down

Soft slowdown of boat speed. Rowers drag their mostly-square oars partially buried through the water.

One Foot, Up and Out

Getting out of a boat. With one hand on the sweep oar (or if sculling, holding both oars) and the other on the gunwhale, rowers step their shore-side foot outside of the boat and onto the ground/dock. They then life themselves out of their seat and lastly swing their remaining foot out of the boat next to the first foot.
